A practical update on medical risk, consent and oral cancer

Professor StJohn Crean is Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at the University of Lancashire, formerly Executive Dean of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences. He is an Honorary Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at East Lancs Hospital Trust, Robert Bradlaw advisor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Editor-in-Chief of the Faculty Dental Journal, MFDS Examiner and University of Cambridge Examiner. He serves as NED at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and sits on councils including NHSA, NW Innovation Agency, and Preston Anchor Board. He leads the Preston Cyber Zone and has chaired the Lancashire LEP Health Sector Board and NCF Workforce and Skills Group.

Aims

• To give the dental team a practical update on medical and pharmaceutical risks, current consent law and the recognition, referral and treatment of oral cancer.

Objectives

• AM - Explain what Montgomery, McCulloch and Bolam mean for consent in dentistry.
• AM - Recognise possible oral cancer, record findings and make the correct referral and describe the likely patient journey after referral. Compare surgery and radiotherapy for oral-cavity cancer, including survival, function and quality of life.
• AM - Explain, in simple terms, how environmental exposures can influence gene expression through epigenetic change.
• PM - Recognise common medical and medication-related factors that alter dental treatment.
• PM - Can bone be influenced for health without posing us issues
