Morning Session with Caroline Smith - To bring about awareness of oral dysfunction that can contribute to disease from a whole-body perspective

Afternoon Session with Nichola Jayne Tong

How to use yoga to reduce chronic musculoskeletal pain & reduce physical & mental stress in dentistry. The afternoon will include, short lectures, practical beginner-level yoga, and mostly yin yoga.

***Delegates are encouraged to wear lounge or sports leggings, maybe a pillow/cushion/blanket, yoga mat or towel/blanket to lay on.**

Aims
  • AM Session
  • To bring about awareness of oral dysfunction that can contribute to disease from a whole body perspective
  • PM Session
  • Learn how to use yoga to:
  • Reduce pain in your back, neck, shoulders, hips, knees, fingers and wrists
  • Ease symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Release bunched-up connective tissue, especially fascia, that contributes to postural misalignment and reduced joint function
  • Strengthen your core and stabilising muscle groups to protect your back
  • Improve working posture and implementation into daily life
  • Reduce muscle fatigue and overload when treating patients
  • Get movement into your working day, even if just for 5 minutes.
Objectives
  • AM Session
  • Outline the importance of breathing dynamics in the development of the orofacial complex
  • Discuss the impact of poor breathing on the lymphatic system and how this can drive systemic inflammation
  • Demonstrate simple breathing techniques to support nasal breathing
  • Demonstrate simple orofacial exercises which support the breathing mechanism
  • Employ a simple referral pathway to complementary practitioners who can support patients you feel would benefit from extra support
  • PM Session
  • Understand what happens to our bodies when we sit down a lot
  • Feel more comfortable in your body by increasing flexibility & reducing pain.

  • Self care & well-being in life & at work

Caroline Smith

Caroline is a Dental Hygiene/ Therapist working in the North East of England who is passionate about integrating lifestyle medicine into the systems and protocols we have in periodontal therapy. The journey has been driven by curiosity, a passion to help people and she is excited to share this exciting field of science with you all. Blending concepts from Nutritional Therapy, Myofunctional Therapy and Positive Psychology for better overall outcomes.

Nichola Jayne Tong

Qualifications: Bachelor of Science with Honours (Health Science). Certified multi-style yoga teacher: (yin, hatha, vinyasa, mandala vinyasa, Kaula tantra yoga, shamanic yoga)

Nichola qualified as a dental hygienist in 1991 with the Royal Army Dental Corps whilst serving 9 years with the Royal Navy. Since then she has worked with several specialist periodontists to learn skills in periodontal disease management; and also how to care for nervous/anxious patients. Nichola earned her BSc (Hons) degree in Health Sciences in 2015 which has given her a greater understanding of healthcare law, leadership, change management, governance, and evidence-based healthcare. As well as being a registered dental professional Nichola is a registered multi-style yoga teacher and a certified SUP yoga instructor.
