Website Goes LIVE

The new GID website went live for real on Friday when three courses were running. Designed and constructed by MA Designs of Cheltenham who were on site to help the secretaries and to answer any queries from the members it took GID well and truly into the new age of computer technology. A couple of little glitches were swiftly ironed out and site performed as I had hoped it would. The exact timing of logging in and out and the allowance for breaks will ensure that the CPD hours are an exact record of each members attendance.

Please be patient with the transfer of all the historical data from the old site, it will happen but due to the bespoke nature of the old site transfer has been more difficult than first thought.

Please also take the time to enter the new site and reset your password. The biggest problem has been incorrect or no e mail address entered on the old site. Also it is worth checking your junk mail folder for the reset password link.

There are some developments in hand that will enhance the site still further but we are always open to suggestions for improvement.

Christmas Party

The second GID Christmas Party built on the success of last year's event...and how! 170 revellers ate, drank, danced and celebrated the beginning of the Christmas season. The champagne reception, kindly sponsored by Dental Directory, got everyone in the party mood and the cocktail bar was in great demand. Sadly the photobooth people did not show up but Archie Manners's slight of hand kept everyone entertained.

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the vodka luge, excellently demonstrated by Sarah Farrier, and the anatomical detail of the sculpture left us in doubt that it was an upper molar. As the evening wore on the molar developed external root resorption that was untreatable except by antisceptic irrigation by vodka which increased the difficulty of collecting the vodka. Sadly this treatment will not be written up in the BDJ.

The band played and the disco blared until the evening finished in the early hours of Saturday.

Review and into the Future

2015 was another great year for all the GID groups with a huge variety of topics covered and a steady growth in membership. The GID Christmas Party at the Racecourse has doubled its numbers and promises to another fun evening. The recent wine tasting event was the best attended and by general accord one of the best ever.

The new website will be live in the next few days, which is why you can now read this news item. A little behind schedule but better to get it as good as possible. It is a much more powerful site that will enable us to expand communications and the improve the general running of the groups.

As always your feedback is vital to iron out any difficulties so please do not hesitate to contact me on

Christmas News

The busiest Autumn ever! The Mouth Cancer Charity Day was an outstanding success with well over 300 delegates enjoying a stunning walk around the racecourse in clear Autumnal sunshine and a very emotional and thought provoking study day. GID raised £3000 for the charity which, with the gift aid, brings the total to £3750 - a fantastic achievement. The event received excellent coverage in the Gloucestershire Echo, Radio Gloucestershire and Cotswold Life and will raise the profile of mouth cancer and GID.

This was swiftly followed by a masterclass in anterior composites both the theory and the practical given by Jason Smithson. Other groups had their own meetings and there is no doubt that GID is thriving.

The annual wine tasting event was soon upon us and was the usual rip roaring success. The winner of the Nick Saunders Cup was Lucy Conrad, another new name in the wine tasting hall of fame. The champagne was sponsored by SDI and Dental Directory provided some fantastic spot prizes.

And so the festive season begins. The inaugural GID Christmas takes place on December 19th at the Racecourse with all sorts of fun features, magician, photobooth, live band, disco. A champagne reception is being provided by Dental Directory and food and wine are included. Its going to be a good start to Christmas week.

Mid January sees John Tiernan visit us with a much anticipated day on conflict resolution encompassing role play. Please make sure you have registered.

On behalf of the GID committees we wish all our members a Happy Christmas.

Mouth Cancer Day

A perfect Autumnal day. Approx 200 people walked the course, 2 ran. Fiona Fullerton started the day with aplomb. Photographers from the Echo and Cotswold Life did their bit. The Echo published an account of the day with accompanying snaps on Monday Oct 13th. We raised just under £3k on the day, a tremendous achievement and thanks to all of you who contributed.

The day itself was hugely successful with a unique blend of theory, practical and all brought to life with the moving accounts of people and families who have lived through oral cancer and survived. I thought every aspect of the day was illuminating and quite emotional at times. There were over 300 GID members at the event, I feel sorry for those who did not attend as they missed a real experience.
