GID now comprises 70% of Gloucestershire GDPs
GID celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012 following its formation in 1992 when the the Government enforced a new contract on the profession that very quickly led them to demand a repayment of fees. At a meeting virtually every GDP in Gloucestershire attended and took action to counter the fee cut. The early years were dominated by the political and economic situation. Slowly the emphasis changed into the current Independent Practitioner Group with its affiliated groups, programme of postgraduate education and continuing business benefits to members, most notably the discount and sponsorship deal that the Dental Directory provides.
GID works towards enabling like minded practitioners to communicate both professionally and socially with the aim of enhancing the perception of dentistry in the wider community. GID works as a group in conjunction with the affiliated groups to provide mutual support and guidance in the ever changing world of dentistry.
GID now comprises 70% of Gloucestershire GDPs which encompasses all age ranges and clinical specialities across Gloucestershire. We also run a few social events for members and partners including wine tasting, golf day and clay pigeon shooting and the occasional ball.
GID supports both local and national charities. In October of 2014 in support of National Mouth Cancer week GID and its groups raised £2500 on the back of A Mouth Cancer Awareness Day. Bond girl Fiona Fullerton started the day by waving off 250 members who did a circuit of the National Hunt Racecourse without the jumps. The annual golf day raises monies for local charities and is run from The Cirencester Golf Course. A hack around the course is followed by a barbecue and prizes for the most outrageous shot. GID adopted Bridge2Aid as its national charity and last summer GID members gave £3950 to the cause on the back of the Secretary and sons competing in the Azores and Back Race. Team Aliana finished first in Class 3 and currently hold the Borough Members Cup. This has funded training and equiping a dental health worker in Tanzania.
GID and its affiliated groups are run by separate committees whose contact details are available on this site and who encourage members to suggest topics for future study days.
Membership of each group is available to those members of the profession who live or work in Gloucestershire and at the discretion of The Committee.
